If you’ve purchased a premium fragrance in the past fifty years, chances are you’ve happened across Pierre Dinand’s work. The perfume bottle designer is responsible for hundreds of the world’s most iconic fragrance bottles, including Yves Saint Laurent Opium and Calvin Klein Obsession (the first flacon made of surlyn, a plastic that mimics frosted glass). Trained as an architect, Dinand brings technical knowledge and an artistic eye to all his creations. It’s no wonder he’s credited with innovating the category – he practically invented it. A living legend, there was no one we’d rather work with on the launch of Glasshouse Fragrances’ new EDPs.
The process began with a visit from our founder Nicole Eckels to Dinand’s Parisian atelier back in 2018. The brief? “To create an elegant, unisex and timeless flacon that would be versatile enough to work with all four fragrances in the portfolio – a challenge as they each evoke a different emotional response,” says Dinand. Eckels was drawn to the simplicity of Dinand’s sketch of a round bottle. “She felt that the sculpted lines added wonderful details that gave the bottle interest and texture while remaining classic and effortless,” he says.
From there, 3D prototypes were built and materials chosen. A labor of love, every detail has been thoughtfully considered – including the cap. Made from Bakelite (a biodegradable material derived from wood) and crafted in France, its heavy-in-your-hand feel and magnetic closure convey a sense of luxury.
